So what about those candles? Could the very toxic candles used to soothe our mood actually be bad for us?
Candles are one of the most favourite indulgence for many of us women. But toxic candles are not only hazardous to our health, but also for our loved ones as well as our furry friends and companions.
Most people love candles and not many homes are without the wafting scent of a perfumed candle. We light them up to infuse a room with delicious fragrance. Make bath times more relaxing and luxurious. Add ambience to a romantic dinner or enhance the sexy atmosphere in the bedroom. Candles make a home raeal home and it’s almost too hard to believe that soothing our mood can actually be bad for us.
Scented candles produce smoke which is laced with almost as many toxins as those produced by cigarettes. We light them in poorly ventilated rooms during the evening when our windows are very likely to be closed. Chemicals can cause indoor pollution with a high risk of causing respiratory issues such as asthma, wheezing, eczema and yes, even skin complaints.
Nothing from China
Beware of imported cheap toxic candles sold in the UK. Most are made from paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, synthetic fragrances and dyes. And then there are those made with animal ingredients such as beef fat. All give off harmful particles when heated up. Not to forget Palm Oil is a total NO NO too.
There are candles out there made using natural perfumes or essential oils, and considering the wick, it has to be made from cotton. Of course, natural candles are a little more expensive. But then, you cannot put a price on your health.
None of us want to knowingly use anything that is potentially dangerous. Anything that burns produces soot and the small particles remain floating in the air for many hours.
I have come across several natural candle makers. Vegan and organic is what I prefer myself. I’d rather not have beef fat or palm oil floating around in my home, so I am pleased that there are natural companies out there. I just found this new little independant one located in the UK.
I like to shop local. How about you?
